Alex has been working this Spring experimenting with scale and materials. While working predominantly as a painter, he doesn't shy away from sculpture and collage, and these elements tend to bleed into his paintings. His work veers into the 3D through his application of materials as well as hanging and display preferences, showing a thoughtfulness not only for painterliness but also for his substrates and additive elements. He is inspired by everyday materials and interactions as well his chosen mediums. His most often used materials include oil paint, gouache, markers, charcoal and resin.
I observe details and the repetition that occurs in our environment. My artwork focuses on magnifying these observations. I am not specifically geared toward one media, although I am attracted to materials that have a certain amount of transparency, and change states from fluid to solid.

Words from curator, Susan Spiritus:

Crystal Tursich’s photograph, “Things We've Saved” has a bare emptiness to it, but it brought me back time and again. Although we only see a small part of a room, we are left to question things about the house. Have they moved out or are they moving in? I chose to believe the former. It appears empty – the people have moved out – or moved on and its starkness was evident to me. Was the photographer the child who played with the bear? Is the photographer the daughter whose parent sat in that chair? While the photo does not give us many answers it is one I returned to several times to think about – but still did not get my questions answered. It left me thinking that the journey began years ago in this house with a child whose favorite toy was the stuffed Pooh bear and the books were his/her favorites that were read on a daily basis…. by whom? I think it was the grandparent’s home for many years and the grandchild made frequent visits. It was probably the ‘favorite’ chair and was used everyday and each time stories were read. Surely a photograph of this arrangement is a way to remember the past – the journey.

Stull’s depiction of water subverts its general seduction, conveying urgency and confinement, rather than an open expanse. Formally, Stull condenses space by manipulating of picture planes. Horizon lines are placed abruptly and unnaturally in the paintings, confusing and compacting fore and backgrounds into a shallow plane.
Stull works many styles into single works of art, including neon oil paint, aerosol gradients, graphic pen & ink patterning, and painterly realism.
Rooted in observational drawing, her works record naturally occurring collections and instances of entanglement found in urban green spaces.

Beach’s work is influenced by her stint in botanical illustration, a field which uses highly detailed rendering to prompt viewers to look both intently and beyond the means of the naked eye. Through this intensified vantage her work asks viewers to meditate on the complexity of ecological systems.

Her current body of work catalogs a specific site along the Olentangy river. Her process begins with on-site exploration: hiking through the woods, wading past the shoreline, and collecting specimens. She makes photo documentation of these interactions and observations, which are then woven together, layered, and rearranged in photoshop after the fact. These images then become reference for her abstracted drawings, etchings, and lithographs.

Beach graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 2016, earning a BFA with concentrations in printmaking and painting. She hopes to grow her body of work manifold in 2019!

Below is his synopsis of this new work.

Is art about landscape relevant in an age when one can travel anywhere in the world with ease (physically or virtually)?

The tradition of landscape painting, admittedly, seems redundant in 2018 if done with reverence and tradition. These mixed media works (created for the exhibition Dimensional Analogue at 934 Gallery in July 2018) are a glimpse into my understanding of landscape in the age of human intervention. Overgrown highway berms, half built structures, piles of garbage, chain link fences that no longer protect or keep out, things that we observe in everyday life that are unremarkable; these things inform my work and make up my contemporary landscape. The environments created in the work exist somewhere between representation and abstraction; objects are recognizable at first to the real world, but are found interacting with abstract mark making that can be both aggressive and subdued.

Using fiber, found, and created materials, Zabor integrates materials not commonly combined into new forms using hand craft processes. These craft processes will often include crochet, weaving, latch hooking, needlepoint, and macrame knots.

Zabor starts her pieces by finding materials that can be worked with in hand-craft methods but are non-traditional craft materials. Past projects have included materials such as; reclaimed wire, video tape, grout, and metal conduit. Starting with no sketch or idea of what the piece will end up looking like, adaptation and flexibility are vital in the final outcome of the piece.

She views her pieces as a performance of labor. Each piece chronicles the time and effort devoted to it. From sourcing the materials and performing the craft action with them, her process is intensive, research heavy, and places an emphasis on repetitive actions and motions.

Alexis Zabor received her B.F.A in Studio art with a concentration in Printmaking from Ohio University in 2018. Since moving back to Columbus she is excited to immerse herself into the Columbus art scene and explore what the city has to offer.
For the past few months, I’ve been working to create a new body of work which is deeply personal, it is called In Silence. It is important that, first and foremost, the images in this series maintain formal design quality and technical finesse. Only then can my thoughts and experience become conceptualized. Ultimately, this series is about loss and creating the work has served as a coping mechanism for me. The official statement is below.

The world moves and I am still. Deafening silence fills the room as I fixate on ceiling tiles. An ultrasound technician to my right fumbles with how to break the news. For the next several days, I go through the motions forcing myself to eat and sleep along the way. Friends and family send their condolences, share their experiences, attempt to console me. I feel everything and nothing all at once. A time of conflicting emotions, I try to make sense of it all.

Becoming a parent was not something I ever dreamed about. I refused to even consider it until my mid-thirties. This late revelation makes the loss that much more prominent. As children, girls are given dolls and kitchen sets to prepare them to play the roles of mother and caretaker. Playing house and pretending to care for a baby lost its appeal for me around the age of eleven. I declared that I was unsure I ever wanted to have children and I gave all of my dolls to my little sister. My mother told me that this broke her heart.

I did not feel my heart break when I miscarried but I felt my body passing a lifeless being. The traumas of pregnancy are not explained to young girls, dolls cannot convey the pains of labor or miscarriage. Pregnancy is discussed as if a baby is definite. Miscarriage is addressed in whispers. We experience this in silence and hope for a successful outcome next time.

This series has been coming together fairly quickly. I started photographing for it in early May and began submitting select images to juried exhibitions and competitions mid-June. I was very pleased when one image was chosen for an exhibition about narrative in photography. Clutching My Belly was shown as part of The Telling Image at Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota from July 13th-August 8th. I’m looking forward to exhibiting more of this work soon. Until then, I’ll continue posting images from these series on my Instagram account and I’ll even be taking over the SPE Women’s Caucus Instagram feed from August 20-26th.

Her thesis project (shown below) was the creation of a book illustrating the tall tales of Ghastley, Ohio. Join us in congratulating Nikki on her huge achievement and in welcoming her back to Columbus!!

“Ghastley, Ohio, is a very normal town. As you can see from these glimpses into the residents’ day-to-day lives, nothing very special happens there. They go on picnics, play summer concerts in the village square, and lock their doors when the mothmen come. It’s a little boring, really. If you avoid the lily pond, you should live a long life there.”

Rafert's artwork uses fairytale-inspired narratives that toy with themes of femininity, lost innocence, puberty and death. Stage-like in their presentation, the works often depict intricate, Victorianesque scenes that are technically stunning, visually lovely, and often slightly foreboding.

The majority of the works on display will be etchings, a centuries-old fine art printmaking technique where the artist uses acid to etch a hand-drawn image onto a metal plate and the plate is then inked and used to transfer that image onto paper via an etching press. Also included in the exhibition will be several mixed media pieces that use a combination of hand painted and screen-printed elements.

Kyla Zoe Rafert is an artist and illustrator living near Amanda, Ohio and is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, with residencies at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Vermont Studio Center and Women's Studio Workshop, among others. Crystal just completed an exciting workshop at Maine Media College. Her description of her time there is below.

<span style="color: #999999; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">In August, I attended a workshop at Maine Media Workshops + College in Rockport, Maine. The workshop was Creating Visual Narratives instructed by Susan Burnstine. It was an intense one week workshop aimed at getting participants to realize the personal thread that runs through their work and to create new work with this realization in mind. Susan had us show work that inspired us as well as our own work, do free writing activities, focus on visual metaphors, and travel to different places while shooting each day. For me, we determined that my common thread or topic is "ties that bind." I focused on this topic throughout the week. My goal in attending the workshop was to create a new body of work and return to the very personal self-portrait work I had done previously. Through Susan's guidance, I feel I'm on the path to making that new work. The images I've included are some of my favorites from the week. These photos were taken at the Topsham Fair on the last day of shooting. I focused on using my reflection in combination with environmental elements in the different spaces to begin building on a narrative of my past and present.

Kyla is a printmaker and painter working out
of Central Ohio. She comes to FLC with a MFA in Printmaking from the University
of Wisconsin (2009). Her artistic process incorporates hand painting with
walnut ink and gouaches, with
silkscreened patterns and textures on single sheets of paper, creating delicate
and decorative mixed media paintings. To see more of her incredible work, check out her website.

I see my current work as the truth bent to
perfection. Set within a meticulously designed world of vanity, beauty, and
abundant pattern, recent works evoke a carefully crafted stage rather than the
happenstance of real life. Echoing fairy tales and Dutch genre paintings of the
17th century, my paintings illustrate adolescent girls and young women in
scenes that play on Romantic notions such as the peril of curiosity, the
potency of beauty, and the inevitable fall of innocence. Despite their
childlike references however, these works are meant to embody the prophetic
perspective of an adult looking backward to an overly romanticized, fictive
past. As an adult, one can look longingly at this world of innocence, and
whether it existed or not, they have always fallen from it: they have traded
their naiveté for the role of a diviner.
